Just a day after the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport was unveiled on the Pebble Beach lawn, Monterey County California (August 16, 2008), the Gooding & Company auctioned off the rights to chassis #1 and the opportunity to work with the Bugatti factory to build the car to their exact specifications. Bidding started at $1.7 million and finally rested with a final offer of $2.9 million. The auction premium of 10 percent then brought the total to $3.19 million.

Bugatti is calling the Grand Sport a roadster with a removable roof. Bugatti has incorporated “innovative structural solutions”, to compensate for a lack of structural integrity normally provided by a roof, however, without sacrificing performance and safety. The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport keeps the coupe's 1001 hp, 16-cylinder engine, and has been developed so there will be no draft inside, even when exploring the upper reaches of the car's 253 mph top speed.






Michelin spent millions of pounds developing tyres capable of withstanding the temperatures and forces at work at 253mph. A set will cost owners about £12,000 – the same as a new Ford Fusion. The brakes, developed by AP Racing, are carbon ceramic. The bumpers and some body panels are aluminium. The exhaust is titanium. Magnesium is used in the engine’s cylinder head. And parts of the chassis are made from carbon fibre. It’s like the world’s fastest chemistry set.The very first build slot for this new car, will be built in Spring 2009.
